Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More
  • If your symptoms are severe, please seek medical attention immediately. You may visit the nearest Accident & Emergency Department. In addition, we provide 24-hour emergency cardiology treatment services at Canossa Hospital.

  • If you have been diagnosed with a heart condition, previously had a heart condition, or are currently experiencing symptoms, please consult your cardiologist for advice on the most suitable cardiac examinations. You should complete the recommended tests as soon as possible according to your doctor’s instructions.
As the structure of the heart is complex and different cardiac tests serve different purposes, your doctor will recommend the most appropriate examinations based on your condition.
If you have never been diagnosed with a heart condition and do not have symptoms, you may choose a cardiac check-up package according to your personal risk level. The more risk factors you have, the more comprehensive the cardiac check-up package you should consider for better protection. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our cardiology team directly.

  • This depends on whether your existing body check is comprehensive enough and your own risk of developing heart disease.
A basic general body check usually includes only a resting electrocardiogram, blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol-related indicators. It may not include more in-depth cardiology investigations.
If you are considered to be at higher risk, you may need additional cardiac examinations. You are also welcome to contact our cardiology team for advice.

  • Yes, we welcome the use of Health Care Vouchers.
As a reminder, the Hong Kong Government deposits the annual Health Care Voucher amount into the accounts of eligible elderly persons aged 65 or above on 1 January each year. Although Health Care Vouchers do not expire, the current accumulation limit is HK$8,000 per account.
For example, if a patient has HK$7,000 in their Health Care Voucher account and chooses a cardiology service costing HK$3,800, the full amount may be paid using Health Care Vouchers. If the voucher balance is insufficient, the patient only needs to pay the remaining balance after voucher deduction.
To check the Health Care Voucher balance, patients may use the eHealth website or mobile app, or call the Health Care Voucher enquiry hotline directly.

  • All patients must present a valid identification document, such as a Hong Kong Identity Card, birth certificate, or passport.
If you are currently taking any medication, including non-cardiac medication, please bring along a list of your current medications. Ideally, the list should include the medication names, dosage, and frequency of use. This will help the doctor with diagnosis and prescription.
If you have recently undergone any body check or medical examination, whether cardiac-related or not, please also bring the relevant reports and documents to your appointment.

  • In general, medical reports should be recent. Depending on your condition, specific reports may also be required.
For example, for patients with coronary heart disease, a cardiologist may need both a CT scan report and reports related to blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol levels.
During your consultation, the doctor will decide whether your existing reports are suitable for assessment. If you have any questions, you may ask our cardiology team when making your appointment.

  • Physical symptoms caused by stress may sometimes resemble symptoms of heart disease. A doctor will need to conduct a consultation and assessment to identify the cause.
However, if you are already experiencing symptoms such as an irregular heartbeat, it is advisable to have a cardiac assessment first. Since some heart conditions can become life-threatening within a short period of time, the best approach is to rule out cardiac causes before considering referral to other specialists if needed.

  • Regular check-ups help monitor your health condition and detect changes, allowing better management of disease risk or the risk of sudden cardiac events.
For high-risk patients, a cardiologist may recommend cardiac examinations several times a year. However, if your risk level is low, you are young, and you do not have any symptoms, an appropriate annual cardiac check-up may be sufficient.

  • Yes. Whether or not you have already been diagnosed, you may contact us directly for cardiology follow-up and treatment services.
To help us better understand your medical needs, please prepare your detailed medical history, medical records, recent body check reports, cardiac examination reports, medication records, and medication details as early as possible.
When making an appointment, please inform our cardiology team about your condition. If further cardiac examinations are required, our team will explain the details to you clearly.

  • Many heart conditions are closely related to lifestyle habits. After surgery, if patients can improve their risk factors, such as maintaining a healthier diet, exercising regularly, and keeping a good daily routine, their overall health may improve significantly. With better health management, recovery may be enhanced and frequent follow-up visits may not always be necessary.
However, as the patient has a previous history of heart disease and ageing is unavoidable, regular cardiac check-ups remain important.

  • Yes. Our cardiology team can provide medical report interpretation services for patients.
Please note that a separate fee applies for the interpretation of reports from examinations not conducted at our centre.

  • Some cardiac examinations are invasive, while others may involve contrast agents or X-rays. Although medical technology is now well established, no examination can be guaranteed to be 100% risk-free.
However, compared with the risk of heart disease or a cardiac event, examinations are still recommended for patients who need them.
Your cardiologist will assess your condition and explain the possible risks, benefits, and limitations of the cardiac examinations. If you have any concerns, please discuss them directly with your doctor.

  • Yes. In general, our cardiology services are handled by the same doctor throughout the consultation and follow-up process, ensuring continuity of care.

  • In general, the cardiologist will select the most suitable medical devices or equipment for each patient, such as pacemakers or vascular stents.
If you have any concerns or preferences, please discuss them directly with your doctor. The doctor will provide the most appropriate recommendation based on your medical condition.
